Benjamin Kam

Surgeon

Dr. Benjamin Kam, MD, MPH has been part of the fabric of Colorado Springs for 30 years. He is a 1991 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and earned an MD and Masters of Public Health at the Tulane University School of Medicine. He went on to serve our country honorably on active duty in the US Air Force for 23 years as both a combat tested flight surgeon and orthopaedic surgeon. He is both Board Certified and holds a Certificate of Additional Qualifications in Sports Medicine. His contributions include training residents as an associate professor of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, a member of the Board of Counselors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Commander of the 673rd Surgical Operations Squadron, and an instructor for the AAOS Disaster Management and Response Courses.

Leann Murphy

Physician Assistant

PA Murphy’s interest in medicine began in 2010 during a mission trip to Kenya. She felt a calling to help others, and upon return to the United States, began her studies to become a physician assistant. She has worked in orthopedics since 2016. She feels fortunate to have great mentorship through Dr. Kam. Her desire is to listen to her patients and create a treatment plan that works well with their goals and capabilities. Leann prioritizes the patient-provider relationship as vital to providing excellent orthopedic care. Leann and her husband are both outdoor enthusiasts. They love hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. She spends her free time spoiling her two dogs with extra long walks.

Kelsey Jackson

Nurse Practitioner

Kelsey is a Colorado native who began her medical career as a certified nurse assistant as she worked to become an RN graduating from the University of Colorado, Anschutz in 2016. She worked as an orthopedic nurse for six years recovering patients, following total joint replacements and orthopedic traumas. She decided she could better serve her patients by furthering her education became a Nurse Practitioner through the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Kelsey takes great pride in providing a personal level of care to each patient and prioritizing that relationship in order to help patient’s reach their goals. She feels fortunate to have great mentorship through Dr. Kam. Being Colorado natives, Kelsey and her husband enjoy exploring all the outdoor beauty the state has to offer with their son and black lab. Their favorite mountain town to visit is Vail and have made it an annual trip since they got married and hope to continue the tradition for years to come.

Mako Kam

Practice Manager

Mako is our practice manager and business lead! She is a 1992 graduate of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and has been associated with the Colorado communities since 1987 with brief interludes moving with her active-duty husband around the world with the US Air Force. Her background is in hotel and residential administration as well as applied mathematics. Her hobbies are following her daughter’s elite figure skating career, managing her “puppy toddlers”, and guiding her sons as they complete their time at the US Air Force Academy.

Ashley Vaughn

Lead Medical Assistant

Ashley is our lead Medical Assistant with a specialty certification in orthopedic medical assisting. Her educational background includes a Pikes Peak Community College Associates degree program in Education and certification in medical assisting from PIMA Medical Institute. Her hobbies include ferret wrangling, dog training, knitting, and cricut exploration.

Caitlyn Sherman

Medical Assistant

Caitlyn is our Medical Assistant. Her certification was done through Intellitec College, and she has worked in Orthopedics as a Medical Assistant since 2018. Her hobbies include playing with her daughter and dogs, sports, and art.

Kiersta Retzlaff

Surgical Scheduler

Kiersta is our surgery scheduler and pre-authorization specialist. Surgeries do not happen without Kiersta’s special touch! Her educational background includes a Pikes Peak Community College degree program in Journalism and completion of a course in medical coding from UCCS. When she is not working miracles by getting patients in to surgery, she spends her time with her husband and children sweeping the board in Monopoly and contemplating life as a YouTuber content influencer.
